Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra: Voices of Courage
When: Wednesday, Oct 11 2017 @ 07:30 PM (GMT-7:00)
Where: Fremont Abbey Arts Center - Seattle, WA
All ages, mostly seated @ Fremont Abbey | 7:30pm show | 7:00p doors | The theme of SMCO's upcoming season of performances is ""Voices of Courage."" In the October performance, SMCO seeks to explore the lasting influence of Black music in the classical music canon, and seeks to continue a conversation about race and persistent problems of inequality in music with the help of poetry. Jessie Montgomery's acclaimed 2014 work Banner, a piece created as a response to the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner by a person of color, will be paired with poetry responses by Seattle Poetry Slam artists. The program also features Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas' Homage to Federico García Lorca, a work that draws on traditional Latin-American music instead of the European tradition of classical music, and the concert wraps up with Aaron Copland's raucous, jazzy masterpiece Music for the Theatre.
