Bertram Levy's Canarissimo
When: Saturday, Mar 12 2022 @ 07:30 PM (GMT-8:00)
Where: Phinney Neighborhood Center Lower Building - Seattle, WA
In Canarissimo, Bertram Levy draws on 12 years of bandoneon studies in Buenos Aires and directing the Seattle tango ensemble Tangoheart since 1999. He conceived this project to feature connections with other vintage styles like North American stride. Dazzling vocalist Robin Kallsen, star clarinetist Jonathan Doyle and versatile bassist Matt Weiner join him for a single 90-minute set. In 1920s Buenos Aires, Francisco Canaro’s tango orchestra was tops. On his tour to Paris in 1925, he was exposed to other popular musics like American Jazz. In later years back home his signature rhythm lost favor as tango evolved. But his early recordings remain the most popular among local dancers and clearly reflect the influence of 1920s stride piano from the US. Canarissimo reimagines Canaro’s music in what Bertram calls Stride Tango Americano. The concert is available to view on Konnectclub until 6:30 pm Tuesday, March 15. Once you begin your stream, you have 24 hours to complete or rewatch.
